A dance to remember...

For Writing, we have been looking at Explanation Writing. Miss Tupou decided to make it a bit more fun and help us remember the structure of an Explanation, by learning a dance move for each aspect.

For Explanation Structure - we identified it as:

Title, Orientation (General Statement), Definition (Defining the phenomenon), Processes (Sequenced Paragraphs), and Conclusion.

Here is a video of our class dance to remember the structure of an Explanation.

Fun Run Term 4!

We ran a distance of 2.4km from Pakuranga Sailing Club to St Kentigern School. At the finish line we had a sausage sizzle and free bottles of water to enjoy.

Liston's Maths work for the week

Today was our first google meet call with my class, it was fun and our teacher had some learning for us to do.
For Maths this week, my groups learning goal to use patterns to find fractions and shapes of sets. After we watched the teacher tools video, Miss Tupou asked us to stay back after our call so she can continue to teach us and help us understand the strategy. After our session with her, we got some follow-up questions to answer. We had to show how we worked out each question. Here is my work.

Hope's LCS task on personal highlights in life!

For LCS our task for that is the list down our Personal Timeline. Using google drawing I've listed 15 personal highlights that have happened in my life until now. I've listed the events and the dates but ones that I could remember and feel okay with other people knowing about my past experiences. The 15 pieces of information are ones that I had fun doing and that made me a bit more social towards people.

Back to Home Learning for T3

Teaching Maths virtually can be quite difficult. Today, for my top Maths group, we were looking at identifying fractions in whole numbers. I started the lesson off by using the base ten pieces but my group were still 50/50 with understanding the concept.

So I used the idea of 'trains & carriages" instead. Inspired from a Teacher Tools video. I was pleased my group was not ashamed to ask for help. Although the drawing (on screen) was not 'perfect', but it helped with teaching my students.

Tread Lightly Caravan

On Tuesday, we had the Tread Lightly Caravan come over to our school. We learnt about the importance of saving electricity and how it would impact the environment. We also learnt about the rubbish that can not be destroyed! This was a very thoughtful learning and I would love to learn about it again...

The Process of Mummification

In addition to our learning of Ancient Egypt, we looked at the process of Mummification. We learnt about the processes of Mummification, wrote an explanation about it and are currently making mummies out of clay. When it dries, we plan to wrap our mummies in linen or string.

Ancient Egypt

This week, our class wanted to learn about Ancient Egypt. We were curious to find out about Mummies and Pyramids and about the ancient civilisation. So Miss Tupou planned our learning based around Ancient Egypt.

Here is an information Report created by Faiana about Pyramids.

The Nile River

In addition to the Pyramids and the Mummies, we have started looking at the Nile River. We've been reading about the advantages of the Nile and how this natural resource provided so much for the Ancient Egyptian Civilisation.

It provided many sources of food, transportation, agriculture and enabled possibilities of trade to occur.

Here is Rottpon's presentation on the River Nile. Enjoy Reading :)

Wint's Writing - Hope

Hope - by Wint

Is there any reason for me to live? I complain on the
longevous bench while I clutch myself away from the
glacial snow and my regrets. The lights behind me
rapidly turn off and on leaving me with undivulged
thoughts. The tulip reminded me of my brother.

He had a bright spirit and was always by my side.
He was suppose to be by my side forever.
But everything didn't matter after he passed.
I sit here every day
thinking of our memories together… I had hope!

Zac's Writing - HOPE

As I sit on the numbing bench frozen ice lands down my shirt and sends icy chills down
my spine. Cold wintry wind blows passed me as a strange mist took habitat around me.
I hold a red tulip flower in memory of my late wife who passed away a few days ago.
She loved red tulips…

37 years ago I met her we were both the loners in school we’d make each other laugh all
the time we grew older together and our love was never to be broken, as my eyes laid on
this flower it seemed like a transparent like figure stood in front of me but when I shifted
my head upwards and nothing.

The sunrise slowly went down and a dark gloomy sky fell over my head and rain poured
down my heart was screaming inside my chest and all I could do was cry the mist cleared
and there was no one there just like my life :( no one was there until my wife came to me
and now all I can do is wait for my time to come and I will finally meet her again.

Khin Linn's Poem

Today I wrote a short diamante poem describing a star, I used interesting words from word hippo-like shimmer, dazzle. I tried to not use the word star, I enjoy making this poem because you get to describe things with lots of words and give a hint of what item or object it is. Hope you enjoy this poem!

Rottpon's inspiring video for today's Kia Kaha Challenge

Here is a video to lift up your spirit during this horrible pandemic. Miss Tupou instructed Room 11 to create a video with positive things in it during this time. I chose to create one with quotes in it. I hope you enjoy my video!

#KiaKahaRoom11 - Challenge #2

As part of our home learning, Room 11 have daily challenges & tasks to complete. This initiative is called #KiaKahaRoom11. The purpose of this initiative is to keep our students uplifted, inspired and continue to think positively, despite whats happening in the world.

Our challenge for today (Tuesday) was:

- Watch Kid President's "20 things we should say more often"
- Create a short video (30-60 seconds) about KINDNESS.

Watch this space for some of the videos Room 11 students have created.

Arts & Culture work by Zac

For L,C,S today. Zac chose to explore the Musee D'Orsay Museum. This museum is located in Paris, France.

Room 11 students choose a museum to explore each day. Their task is to select an artefact or famous painting that intrigues them. Create an information poster about it and share it. Here's an information poster about Vincent Van Gogh that captured Zac's interest while exploring the museum in Paris.

Khin Linn's poem

Part of Room 11's daily 5 tasks is to write pieces of poetry. Khin created a great piece here, where she describes the Moon, without using the word 'Moon'.

Check out her descriptive poem.

Last week I did a Poem describing the moon, I used word hippo to get more interesting words. I gave out hints that I'm describing the moon. I also decorated it so it can be more enjoyable to read.

Annaleeze shares one of her Daily 5 tasks

For Listen to Reading for Daily 5, I chose a video on Coconet tv about how some U.S Territories Don't get Voting Rights and certain U.S restrictions. Here is my work. Miss Tupou provided some questions to answer after we listen to someone read or when we finish watching an informative video.

The British Museum - By Rottpon

For L.C.S this week Room 11 will be looking into the different museum around the work. We then have to pick a Museum and a piece of art to do facts on. I chose the British Museum for Day 1 and Mummies as my art. Here are some facts about them, Enjoy!

Week 1 of online learning...

Who would have thought we'd be teaching our students online via google meets?

For room 11, on average we have about 11-12 of us attending our hangout calls. Our highest no. of recipients in one call would was 17 and we currently hold the record for highest no. of attendees at GTS!

It's definitely DIFFERENT but I appreciate each and everyone of my students who make the effort to attend every phone call, to talk and discuss our HOME LEARNING expectations.

Kiwi-Sport: Squash 2020

Today was our last day for SQUASH. A new sport that we got to experience and enjoy. Some of us have never played squash before but after our 7 weeks with them, we learnt to grow a love for it. It's competitive and FUN!

Some of the tips/techniques we learnt:

  • Volley more! It takes time away from your opponent and allows you to stay closer to the T. Learn to volley and try take the opportunities whenever you can
  • Try keep in front of your opponent at ALL times.
  • Shoulders facing the side
  • Make sure your grip is correct
  • Make sure your serve hits the side wall
